    Through the Wall…

    2009 - 12.20

Finally Kicked Zathrian’s arse! Making progress through Dragon Age again…

An end in sight, but over the Horizon…

    2009 - 12.19

I need to finish at least 2 games before I can buy Mass Effect 2. So at the moment I’m rotating between Dead Space and Dragon Age. Dead Space scored the hit for today, I’m fighting the Leviathan in Chapter 6 at the moment. Meanwhile, in Dragon Age I’m hopefully just about to finish off the Danish Elves area, just run into a little snag.

    An upgrade at no cost…

    2009 - 12.19

Changed the connection for my Xbox 360 over to HDMI today. Somewhat surprised by the difference. I’d thought it was pretty good on the standard Component Cable. However, it’s sharper, richer and no noticeable sound difference (which I’d expected). It’s going to stay that way now.

    Over the Border…

    2009 - 11.15

Been pissing myself laughing playing Borderlands on the xbox 360 over last few days. I think the only thing that’s made me laugh this much before has been Mario Strikers on the Wii!

Echoes of Bioware from days past…

    2009 - 11.08

Well the majority of the last three days’ free time has been playing Dragon Age: Origins. Been a while since I enjoyed a game as much as Mass Effect (note I’m talking about the original, not 2), the original Neverwinter Nights, or Baldur’s Gate (either). I can see this one getting several plays just to see how differently you can manage things as a Mage or Rogue. It’s unfortunate I didn’t get this while I was on leave a couple of weeks ago. There’s no doubt the story’s been given strong attention once again, and I’m already entwined in the machinations of the factions involved.

A lot of gaming to be had the next few weeks.

    Long way to 111 yet…

    2009 - 09.07

Well the odometer has rolled over another kilometre in my life, although I confess to not really noticing any difference these days when they do. It was nearly a Shagless Birthday, but the Cosmos merely wanted to tease me I think: a call late Saturday night just after one guest left preceded an unexpected but welcome visit from an old friend I don’t see much these days. Apparently she was slipping into Ballarat for Father’s Day, and just gave me a quick call to see if I was still up. Several hour’s later my faith in the Cosmos was once again confirmed. An unintended Birthday present gratefully accepted. Thanks J.

Top that off with an ADO today, finishing F.E.A.R. Files meaning yet another xbox 360 finished and all in all I call it a nice long weekend.

Some more tangible presents were in the form of the below:

    Cthulhu RP dice

Cthulhu RP dice that are luminous!

    Thanks Mr Awesome!

    New Boardgame

    New Boardgame Middle-Earth Quest

    Thanks Furbag

    Games, games, games…

    2009 - 07.18

I discovered today that I have three game expansions that were basically unplayed, and not even fully unpacked!

    The expansions in question were:

The Tomb of Ice an expansion for Descent: a Journey in the Dark.

The Island of Dread an expansion for Runebound 2nd Edition. In the interests of reducing the numbers, I cracked this one tonight (Friday) and did a play test to familiarize myself with the facets of the expansion.

Amazingly, amongst these is Kingsport Horror an expansion for Arkham Horror. Mind you, I’ve got Innsmouth Horror on the way now, so I really need to get this one played.

Hopefully I can crack The Tomb of Ice on Saturday afternoon, evening, and this will only leave one to try and get cracked before the newest additions arrive sometime next week. One the way other than the one previously mentioned are: The Frozen Wastes, another for Runebound 2nd Edition, and the newly released Age of Conan: the board game. I’m really looking forward to unpacking that one and getting people around the table for a session.

Also dug this one out of the archives to check. My friend Mark bought Fellowship of the Ring in about 1984 or ’85. He very kindly gave it to me a couple of years ago, knowing my interest in both boardgames and Tolkien.

It’s a classic ICE. We unpacked it, but never actually got to play it. We were all too wasted at the time to make sense of it. So it’s still virgin so to speak. YES, all those D6’s are counters. I hope to get a game of it organized one day soon.

Speaking of board game lust (which obviously I am languishing in), I’m counting the weeks until the release of Middle Earth Quest. This looks absolutely fantastic, and a wonderful compliment to War of the Ring.

*sigh* I wonder how one gets into a career as a game designer?

    In pursuit of gaming…

    2009 - 07.05

I’ve been pondering how to get a few more board games happening. The thought has occurred to me to try remote board games. I’m considering how best to get an internet camera to effect some games across the internet with geographically distant friends. Of course it’s going to be difficult with the size of the board games I like to play. I’ve yet to determine whether or not, the iMac inbuilt camera will do the job or not; it may be necessary to purchase a separate camera and position it somewhere better. I will probably need something with a bit of zoom anyway. Additionally it’s most likely going to need games that the other has played just to make life a little easier for the remote party. I’ve pondered how we might do it for the games we both have, but not sure how that could be made to work for the random aspects of a game. Research continues.

No Sex Please We’re … GAMERS!

    2009 - 07.02

This is definitely a worry. My world is obviously crumbling…

    Work, Play, Work, Play…

    2009 - 06.03

Last few weeks have been flat out at work, and it seems that all I’ve had the interest in (outside of the usual sex, sex, and more sex), is watching video and playing games. However, that said, there’s been at least one “achievement”: I finished F.E.A.R. 2 on the xbox 360! Just 2 more games to finish and I can buy another one.

On another front, I discovered a fascinating show: Fringe. Probably a bit behind the times with this one, compared to some others, but it’s definitely got me hooked, in much the same way that Dexter entrapped me. It’s a pleasant surprise to see John Noble in a role again. I’m not sure why I don’t come across him in roles, other than Denethor (LoTR). He’s really very talented and a joy to watch. He literally radiates the emotive and psychological essence of a role. He absolutely cracked me up with the following couple of lines:

Walter: “This man’s been shot in the head!”
    Peter: “Is that a problem?”
Walter: “Of course it’s a problem!”

I’ve also been trying (and I DO mean trying) to watch Dollhouse by Jos Whedon. Normally I’m a big fan of Jos, but I’m struggling with this one. I cursed the executives that instigated the demise of Firefly. But I’m not sure I’d be so indignant about this one. I’ve watched 3 episodes so far, and I confess to wishing each episode to end upon reaching halfway through. The more I see her in action, and I like to watch her in action as she’s quite attractive, the more I am convinced that Eliza Dushku is less than acceptably talented as an actor. She just plays (I suspect anyway) Eliza Dushku! Every character I see her play is Faith all over again. So, short of the “eye candy” factor, the interest has got tired quickly, and the overall story is unlikely to have time to grab me: if I get to episode 6, I’ll be surprised. The concept has merit, but it’s lacking the character interaction and “chemistry” of his other creations. Perhaps he needs to move on from his stable of actors for lead roles and seek a new range of ingredients and create a new meal. This one lacks flavour.
