Hopefully all the Rapids are Behind…

    2015 - 02.08

Well it’s been a fairly positive week. Five days back at work, and a plan for the next few weeks. I’ll work from home alternate days, basically on BAU, it’s easy to track so keeps people happy. I’m feeling better within myself again, I certainly have a bit of positivity back. I’ve been pretty tired after the week, but that’s ok, sleeping much better now. So far I’m only waking up about once in the middle of the night. For me that’s fantastic progress. I also seem to be getting to sleep quicker.

I’ve not done much with the Photography over the last few weeks. But I’m going to swing back into it over the next week or so. I just need to get back into the routine of work again first. Currently that’s one of my prime tasks, once that’s back in tune, I should have the available energy to devote to my other goals.

I’m hoping to pick up the Nikon D810 soon, possibly within the next 6 weeks. The price is creeping up so I’d rather get it sooner than later.

Pulling Myself Out of the Pit…

    2015 - 02.01

Well the week has passed and finished on fairly high notes.

Work has been extremely supportive and we’re shaping some new strategies to help me stay there at this stage. Yes it’s in their interests to do so, I’m a high performer when I’m there. Certainly from my point of view, the longer I can stay at this point the better off financially I can be working towards substituting Photography for my income.

The Bank approved my application so I’ve removed the burden of Credit Card Debt from my outgoings, and that will make a significant difference to my financial state within a few months. Just in time for winter, given that is my worst time of year from a bills perspective. I think I’ve developed the discipline over the last two years to make the most of this opportunity now. I have one expensive item on my list, a Nikon D810, but it will be waiting until I have the cash ready.

The Anxiety has virtually vanished overnight with the response from work, and coupling that with the change in finances, my general disposition is at the highest it’s been in years!

Just need to get some more Cat Food before the Furbags start eating me in my sleep!

    Head Up and Looking Forward…

    2015 - 01.11

Well another weekend is coming to an end, I didn’t get out for a shoot this weekend, but did do some work towards the business. As long as I’m doing something each day towards preparing or growing the business I’ll be satisfied that I’m making progress towards that freedom down the track.

Caught up with a few friends by phone & email, which I make an effort to do each Saturday morning usually. But now I’ll spread that out a bit more given that I’m scheduling quite a few of the maintenance tasks for the business such as ensuring the preparation of stock and the supplying of stock to the various sites I’ve now got to manage. Other preparations have gone well too, but they’re not to be actioned for quite some time yet.

I’ve also decided that the Camera shop downtown does the best prints of all my options here: Fuji processing and it really “pops”. So that will be my Stock choice for the orders; despite the increase in cost, I think it will be a better product for the purchasers from the Etsy Store.

    Out of the Blocks…

    2015 - 01.06

Well I’ve got through the Alamy.com Quality Control without any hitches, so I can upload stock anytime. Have to get a “swift code” from my bank though. Or I can get paid by paypal. Haven’t made up my mind yet.

On the Bank with My Feet Dangling in the Stream…

    2015 - 01.05

Well I took another step towards testing the waters from the photography business side of things today. I signed up to Alamy.com today and submitted some images to the Quality Control Assessment in the hope of getting a portfolio of stock photos up there. Hopefully I’ll get through that and be able to put some stock up and see how it goes there too.

They are one of, if not the largest Stock Photo suppliers on the internet. If I can start making an inroad there, something may happen in the next twelve months. I’m not expecting to make sales yet, but these are the avenues for sales in the sort of work I’m planning to sell. Anything that comes from this for the first year will go straight to debt reduction. Anything that can reduce my need for my current job is a good thing.

    Feeling Proactive Again…

    2015 - 01.04

Well I’ve made the time for the WordPress update to 4.1 and got my arse into gear on making sure I have current backups of all the blogs, databases and images involved. This definitely relieves my concerns a bit about the future for my photography, as I’d really hate to lose any of the blogs, but particularly now Shards Of Arcadia. Only took a couple of hours to complete all the tasks. I really must get about to automating as much as possible. Still manual is better than none.

As unlike me as it sounds, Shards Of Arcadia had not had a backup since it went live! I know, insane! Also Tigga was unhappy that her blog was not backed up. Apparently her busy paws don’t like to repeat themselves.

Of course that then prompted the discussion from Chemoux about when she was getting such a thing also. She certainly has plenty to say, so I guess that won’t be far off. Probably configure that for her soon on a Friday night with nothing else to do.

    A Gem in the Sand…

    2015 - 01.02

Well the Akismet subscription for the Shards of Arcadia blog is definitely money well spent, it’s saved me sorting over 300 spams to that blog in the last few days. Clearly it’s been heavily targeted since it’s been connected with the online shop. Anyway, it’s well protected now it seems, and I’ll consider such a subscription for the others if necessary down the track.

He Spams me, He Spams Me Not …

    2014 - 12.31

Well the spam comments on the photography blog were becoming so annoying that I decided to get an Akismet subscription for it. It’s been a boon for comment management I have to say, and well worth the $5 / month subscription price. Haven’t had a problem since. Clearly wordpress is a target for these spammers that they feel worth hammering at hard. Anyway, given that the blog is connected to my photography business now I felt they were justified in having a paid subscription from me for it. And I’m not sorry.

Clouds, but not in the Sky…

    2014 - 12.30

I’ve been persuaded by the experience of a friend to upgrade my NAS for a third time! Yes I know, I’ve tried three “domestic” NAS’ before and been unhappy with the performance of all of them from a transfer perspective. I have indicated in the past that I’d not bother with anything less than $1000 for my next one. However the feedback on this one is that it’s what I’d expect for the price ($400)! Previous NAS have left a bad taste in my mouth with fairly pathetic network transfer speeds, no better than USB 2, and sometimes not even that good. Given that they’ve been touted as having gigabit network connectivity, you’d expect better. But in real life they’ve all been disappointing. So this time I’ve higher hopes. I’ve lashed out for the fourth drive and slapped 4 x 2tb WD Red into a WD My Cloud EX4.

Given that I’ve dumped all Movie and TV video files now, since my decision to basically not engage with the industry much anymore, I’ve got no need to bother with streaming to the TV etc, so that service is turned off. I’ve not been really sold on the iTunes library idea on NAS yet either, so that too is turned off for the meantime.

I’ll be mainly using this NAS for storage without the “frills”. Photos will need to be stored in another place so that I’ve got backups on it too. I’ve got Time Machine backups running on another NAS, which I’m keeping, for the moment. I want to do some more research on the Time Machine backups on NAS over RAID 5 to see if they’re any issues. If not, then I may move those backups over, or start second backup for the iMac.

Certainly early experience is already much better since’s it’s not going to take a day to format the RAID array like the last. It seems to have managed that in a bit less than 15 mins for the RAID 5 array. It did make some weird and wonderful noises at the finalisation of the RAID array, presumably configuring for the parity. Anyway, initial tests with one drive as a single no RAID partition were encouraging with transfer speeds equivalent to USB 3 or THUNDERBOLT. I’ll be content with that for the price. It’s also got NIC aggregation, which may or may not help, but given that it’s rarely going to be under heavy NETWORK load, I’m curious but not desperate to check that out. Interestingly this is aimed at small business or SOHO as it’s got redundant power and NIC. Since it’s on a UPS, I’m going to take my time with another PSU, a spare drive is probably more important just now.

As it stands, its copying it’s first 200gig onboard at approx 55MB/s which is blinding compared to the previous 20MB/s or less of before.

    Tough Choices Ahead…

    2014 - 12.11

I began to wonder today if this most recent bout of Depression isn’t really trying to make me realise that I’m just really in the wrong space at this point. No matter which Personality Test I have taken over the years, they consistently indicate that my Personality Type really isn’t supposed to be doing, or expected to be doing what I do for a living now. My Personality Type is generally expected to be best suited for Helping Professions, Teaching Professions, or Artistic endeavours. I think it’s really time I bit the bullet and made some tough choices. After all, I am really quite over working in IT!
