    What’s in a Name…

    2015 - 03.10

Well the long weekend has passed, and already I feel like it’s Thursday, not a Pseudo-Monday! Only 3 days to go, but it feels like I’ve already waded through four with another four in front. I think I’d feel better if I’d managed to end up with more useable shots from yesterday. However as happens, “there’s days you do, and days you don’t”.

That said, yesterday WAS and interesting day despite some poor timing on my part. I met a person who was very helpful with local information for one of the sites I visited yesterday. I’ll keep hold of that for a further visit. It’s wonderful how complete strangers can just strike up a wonderfully rich conversation on a shared interest, and not get around to asking names until saying “Goodbye, oh by the way, my name’s …

There’s No Price on Friendship (except perhaps Pride)…

    2015 - 03.02

Today I renewed an old and for a time “broken” friendship. I’m gladdened and appreciative that it’s been returned in kind. It’s the second significant and important friendship I’ve managed to renew in the last few years. These are the things money just doesn’t buy no matter how much you have or don’t have, all that’s required is effort and willingness to put into it.

    2015 - 02.28

Yesterday my new Lens the Nikkor AF Micro 200mm F4D IF-ED arrived. I’ve yet to do anything other than pull it out of it’s case. Hopefully today I shall get a chance with it. I think this will be the last Macro lens I buy for quite some time.

I was saddened this morning to hear that Leonard Nimoy is DEAD! The Man who became an Icon: Spock is Dead…

Hopefully all the Rapids are Behind…

    2015 - 02.08

Well it’s been a fairly positive week. Five days back at work, and a plan for the next few weeks. I’ll work from home alternate days, basically on BAU, it’s easy to track so keeps people happy. I’m feeling better within myself again, I certainly have a bit of positivity back. I’ve been pretty tired after the week, but that’s ok, sleeping much better now. So far I’m only waking up about once in the middle of the night. For me that’s fantastic progress. I also seem to be getting to sleep quicker.

I’ve not done much with the Photography over the last few weeks. But I’m going to swing back into it over the next week or so. I just need to get back into the routine of work again first. Currently that’s one of my prime tasks, once that’s back in tune, I should have the available energy to devote to my other goals.

I’m hoping to pick up the Nikon D810 soon, possibly within the next 6 weeks. The price is creeping up so I’d rather get it sooner than later.

In for a lot of Dungeon Crawling…

    2015 - 01.24

Another tough week, but at least there’s been some positive action come out of it, if only because of an unexpected attack of anxiety as well. I don’t normally feel anxious as such. My Depression generally manifests without it. But this week I began to get caught up in a being in a maelstrom of Depression & Anxiety with seemingly no hope of escape.

However I managed to springboard off to another chat with the GP and up the Antidepressants for a period of time until things become manageable again. I’ve also organised to talk with the Bank about rejigging the mortgage to fortnightly payments and suck up the last of my credit cards into the mortgage to focus all my debt in one place with a much lower interest rate. That will make a huge difference to me by the end of this year. I’ve also hooked up with a new Psychologist since my last one has retired and I’ve been procrastinating about organising another one. Just need to get the workplace sorted out for the time being and try and settle in for the ride again.

However with all that good work done this week, I had a bit of an emotional spend. Of course I blame the cat Chemoux; I reckon she’s worse than Tigga, it must be the Kitten in her still. In the cat’s defence, all of them were reduced by 20% or more.

So really what’s happened now up to this point tonight is a spending spree consisting of the following: Descent ver. 2 plus a couple of expansions and additionally the unrelated Battle of the Five Armies. All of these from Games Paradise. However they didn’t have some of the expansions in stock. Then, a quick trip to Ozgameshop and picked up a conversion kit to convert the Descent Ver. 1 characters and monsters for play with Ver. 2. Then slipped over to Bookdepository, and picked up the expansions I couldn’t get at games paradise or ozgameshop. It’s concerning for me that book depository are now selling boardgames.

All in all a good shop, and I can’t actually remember the last boardgame I bought, it’s been a while. I’d say it must have been the final expansion for Arkham Horror being the Miskatonic Horror. This was an expansion for every previous expansion and the main game. I do love my Arkham Horror too.

    Feeling Proactive Again…

    2015 - 01.04

Well I’ve made the time for the WordPress update to 4.1 and got my arse into gear on making sure I have current backups of all the blogs, databases and images involved. This definitely relieves my concerns a bit about the future for my photography, as I’d really hate to lose any of the blogs, but particularly now Shards Of Arcadia. Only took a couple of hours to complete all the tasks. I really must get about to automating as much as possible. Still manual is better than none.

As unlike me as it sounds, Shards Of Arcadia had not had a backup since it went live! I know, insane! Also Tigga was unhappy that her blog was not backed up. Apparently her busy paws don’t like to repeat themselves.

Of course that then prompted the discussion from Chemoux about when she was getting such a thing also. She certainly has plenty to say, so I guess that won’t be far off. Probably configure that for her soon on a Friday night with nothing else to do.

    A Gem in the Sand…

    2015 - 01.02

Well the Akismet subscription for the Shards of Arcadia blog is definitely money well spent, it’s saved me sorting over 300 spams to that blog in the last few days. Clearly it’s been heavily targeted since it’s been connected with the online shop. Anyway, it’s well protected now it seems, and I’ll consider such a subscription for the others if necessary down the track.

He Spams me, He Spams Me Not …

    2014 - 12.31

Well the spam comments on the photography blog were becoming so annoying that I decided to get an Akismet subscription for it. It’s been a boon for comment management I have to say, and well worth the $5 / month subscription price. Haven’t had a problem since. Clearly wordpress is a target for these spammers that they feel worth hammering at hard. Anyway, given that the blog is connected to my photography business now I felt they were justified in having a paid subscription from me for it. And I’m not sorry.

Clouds, but not in the Sky…

    2014 - 12.30

I’ve been persuaded by the experience of a friend to upgrade my NAS for a third time! Yes I know, I’ve tried three “domestic” NAS’ before and been unhappy with the performance of all of them from a transfer perspective. I have indicated in the past that I’d not bother with anything less than $1000 for my next one. However the feedback on this one is that it’s what I’d expect for the price ($400)! Previous NAS have left a bad taste in my mouth with fairly pathetic network transfer speeds, no better than USB 2, and sometimes not even that good. Given that they’ve been touted as having gigabit network connectivity, you’d expect better. But in real life they’ve all been disappointing. So this time I’ve higher hopes. I’ve lashed out for the fourth drive and slapped 4 x 2tb WD Red into a WD My Cloud EX4.

Given that I’ve dumped all Movie and TV video files now, since my decision to basically not engage with the industry much anymore, I’ve got no need to bother with streaming to the TV etc, so that service is turned off. I’ve not been really sold on the iTunes library idea on NAS yet either, so that too is turned off for the meantime.

I’ll be mainly using this NAS for storage without the “frills”. Photos will need to be stored in another place so that I’ve got backups on it too. I’ve got Time Machine backups running on another NAS, which I’m keeping, for the moment. I want to do some more research on the Time Machine backups on NAS over RAID 5 to see if they’re any issues. If not, then I may move those backups over, or start second backup for the iMac.

Certainly early experience is already much better since’s it’s not going to take a day to format the RAID array like the last. It seems to have managed that in a bit less than 15 mins for the RAID 5 array. It did make some weird and wonderful noises at the finalisation of the RAID array, presumably configuring for the parity. Anyway, initial tests with one drive as a single no RAID partition were encouraging with transfer speeds equivalent to USB 3 or THUNDERBOLT. I’ll be content with that for the price. It’s also got NIC aggregation, which may or may not help, but given that it’s rarely going to be under heavy NETWORK load, I’m curious but not desperate to check that out. Interestingly this is aimed at small business or SOHO as it’s got redundant power and NIC. Since it’s on a UPS, I’m going to take my time with another PSU, a spare drive is probably more important just now.

As it stands, its copying it’s first 200gig onboard at approx 55MB/s which is blinding compared to the previous 20MB/s or less of before.
