    Maintenance Time…

    2015 - 04.12

Well no photography this weekend, been trying to stave off this cold that keeps “pecking” away at me. Weather’s been a little cool for me to feel comfortable about wandering about the countryside even if it was going to be both fun and productive. There’s alway next weekend. I did notice a few fungi in the backyard, so maybe they’re going to be early this year. It’s not been much of a summer from a weather perspective.

While I have spent much of the weekend on other technologies, I have at least done a bit of maintenance, and checked all the gear. Lenses have been cleaned, exteriors of lenses and cameras brushed clean, batteries charged up, and flash batteries checked too.

On the software side, updates have been applied, firmware checked on the cameras and flashes, and there’s been a bit of a clearing out of some old photos not really coming up to scratch now days. I also made sure that backups are up to date, and that there’s an extra one for offsite.

I’ve collected receipts for tax time as that will be coming up on me quickly, and I really need to be motivated to get that in early.

    Virtually Transitioning…

    2015 - 04.12

So as it stands, the Furbags and I have spent most of the weekend around home and keeping warm.

I took the opportunity to do a couple of things in the study I’ve been waiting for some “significant” reason to make the time to do. Rebuilt a lot of the virtual environments on VMware. I bought a copy of Fusion for the iMac, then decided I liked it so much I could make use of the “Pro” version. The additional features, at least a lot of them were worth having it seemed to me. I’ve been a supporter of Virtualbox for many years, and was quite happy with it most of the time, but every so often it’s bitten me in the arse in some way or another. The Server environment is still sitting on Virtualbox, but perhaps not for much longer. There’s need for some adjustments and that may just entail using VMware for the next incarnation.

As much as I’ve been a fan of Virtualbox with it’s consistency across platforms, even to the point of using it over HyperV in my work environment, things have started to creep in that have left me wondering whether it was time to look at other options. So far I don’t feel I’ve lost anything, and gained quite a bit.

    Cardboard Everywhere…

    2015 - 03.30

I’ve been on a board games spree this last month, catching up on all the titles I’d been putting off last year. But now that I’ve cleared those credit cards, I’ve been catching up. Latest to join the cupboard of “board gaming goodness” are the following titles listed below.

Descent: Journeys in the Dark Version 2 and all the expansions for it.
Descent: Journeys in the Dark Version 2 conversion kit for Version 1.
    Android.
    Merchant of Venus.
    Battle of Five Armies.
Eldritch Horror and Mountains of Madness Expansion.

Last weekend the Photography took a second place to the gaming. Speaking of Gaming, I have finally got to play what will most likely be the last computer game I buy: Pillars of Destiny. I’ve been looking forward to this games for months. The wait is over and it’s every bit as good as I’d hoped. For fans of the BG I & II, Icewind Dale and Torment games, look no further for you reprise of a dose of good old fashioned RPG.

And as an aside there’s a nice new Macbook Pro on it’s way too. The PC is being donated to a friend who no doubt will relish every windows moment! The PC hasn’t been used since over a year ago when I bought the 27″ iMac.

    Lazy Sunday Morning…

    2015 - 03.15

Over a year ago I shutdown the Windows PC and I’ve not used it for that period. Everything I do I do in OS X now, and Linux. The occasional use of Windows can be dealt with in a Virtual via Virtualbox. So today I’ve fired up the Windows PC, given it the updates, updated a couple of applications on it and then created a Virtual HD of it to pull into Virtual Box on the iMac. The hardware itself is going to a friend, except the HDDs. The SSDs are becoming drives in the MacMinis using the second HDD kits I bought some time ago from ifixit.

Uploaded some more shots to Alamy and just have to wait for them to be passed through QA.

Work is seemingly more insane by the day. Once upon a time you could only notice the sanity factor slipping every few weeks, or roughly a month at a time. Now it’s noticeable day by day. I wandered into work the other morning and there was a guy flaked out on the desk as if he was dead. I thought he was for a minute. Then I noticed him breathing. He was in a locked room, so I couldn’t do any more, I’d banged on the door and rang the phone. He was that soundly asleep I couldn’t wake him. His manager apparently thinks that is ok. *shrug* That’s the sort of thing that tells you the place is batshit crazy. But I’ve made it through the week, and relaxed all weekend so far.

Other than the above, not much news. I think Chemoux has a cold, she’s sneezing a lot last couple of days. :S

    What’s in a Name…

    2015 - 03.10

Well the long weekend has passed, and already I feel like it’s Thursday, not a Pseudo-Monday! Only 3 days to go, but it feels like I’ve already waded through four with another four in front. I think I’d feel better if I’d managed to end up with more useable shots from yesterday. However as happens, “there’s days you do, and days you don’t”.

That said, yesterday WAS and interesting day despite some poor timing on my part. I met a person who was very helpful with local information for one of the sites I visited yesterday. I’ll keep hold of that for a further visit. It’s wonderful how complete strangers can just strike up a wonderfully rich conversation on a shared interest, and not get around to asking names until saying “Goodbye, oh by the way, my name’s …

    Black Gold…

    2015 - 02.28

Yesterday my new Lens the Nikkor AF Micro 200mm F4D IF-ED arrived. I’ve yet to do anything other than pull it out of it’s case. Hopefully today I shall get a chance with it. I think this will be the last Macro lens I buy for quite some time.

    There’s Glass and then there’s GLASS…

    2015 - 02.24

I’m still awaiting the shipping of my Nikkor AF Micro 200mm F4D IF-ED. From all that I’ve read, I’ve found only one less than positive review, and I’ve read bucket loads.

I’m chuffed about the price, it’s a bargain at the price, and from what I can gather, not all that easy to come across. Foolish me ordered right at the start of the Chinese New Year Holidays, so today is really their first day back to business I guess. *sigh*

This is my first expensive “Big Player” lens. Not that I don’t have some excellent quality lenses, but I’m keen to see what a Class A lens is really like to use and the subsequent results. It’s my hope this is the last Macro lens I buy in a very long time. I’ve had my big spend for the year. Now it’s time to start stacking it away and see what I can achieve by the end of the year.

Summer Breeze Makes Me Feel Fine…

    2015 - 02.14

Well the last week was tiring but positive. Getting to work was a successful venture at this stage. Worked from home three days and got to work the other two. That was as arranged, and helped significantly. The same for this week. Monday, Wednesday & Friday again. After that we’re mixing up the days again.

The day after my last post I ordered the Nikon D810, and it arrived on the following Thursday just past. The price had risen $100 in the last month. No sign of that stopping. It’s defintely a great beast, but I’ve had scarcely any time to play with it yet. I’ve managed to charge up the batteries and configure the settings to match my preferred settings similar to the D600 and the D7000. I may need to changed those for this camera, it’s some different processor technology and image capture technology. Still I need a starting point for comparison!

I’ve also ordered memory cards and a sensor cleaning kit while I’m at it.

The final components of the order I placed about three weeks ago for ensuring I had the complete kit of Descent: Journeys in the Dark Ver. 2 have shipped. Interestingly the last to ship was the Australian Supplier, all the overseas orders had arrived weeks ago. And they wonder why they’re struggling to have people buy locally.

So enjoyed some rain for last couple of days, done the usual phone calls to catch up with friends, housework, been for a walk and played with the Moggies. It’s warming up now, and a bit bright, but I may still take the new beast out for a bit of a run.

Hopefully all the Rapids are Behind…

    2015 - 02.08

Well it’s been a fairly positive week. Five days back at work, and a plan for the next few weeks. I’ll work from home alternate days, basically on BAU, it’s easy to track so keeps people happy. I’m feeling better within myself again, I certainly have a bit of positivity back. I’ve been pretty tired after the week, but that’s ok, sleeping much better now. So far I’m only waking up about once in the middle of the night. For me that’s fantastic progress. I also seem to be getting to sleep quicker.

I’ve not done much with the Photography over the last few weeks. But I’m going to swing back into it over the next week or so. I just need to get back into the routine of work again first. Currently that’s one of my prime tasks, once that’s back in tune, I should have the available energy to devote to my other goals.

I’m hoping to pick up the Nikon D810 soon, possibly within the next 6 weeks. The price is creeping up so I’d rather get it sooner than later.

Pulling Myself Out of the Pit…

    2015 - 02.01

Well the week has passed and finished on fairly high notes.

Work has been extremely supportive and we’re shaping some new strategies to help me stay there at this stage. Yes it’s in their interests to do so, I’m a high performer when I’m there. Certainly from my point of view, the longer I can stay at this point the better off financially I can be working towards substituting Photography for my income.

The Bank approved my application so I’ve removed the burden of Credit Card Debt from my outgoings, and that will make a significant difference to my financial state within a few months. Just in time for winter, given that is my worst time of year from a bills perspective. I think I’ve developed the discipline over the last two years to make the most of this opportunity now. I have one expensive item on my list, a Nikon D810, but it will be waiting until I have the cash ready.

The Anxiety has virtually vanished overnight with the response from work, and coupling that with the change in finances, my general disposition is at the highest it’s been in years!

Just need to get some more Cat Food before the Furbags start eating me in my sleep!
